Program 3.29.15: Candle With A Cause, Actual Brewing, and more!

Story:

Burke and I were honored to be contacted by Denise with Candle With A Cause and invited to stop by for a tour. We packed up our microphone and headed over to the east side of town for not only a Candle With A Cause visit, but also a visit with the Brewers at Actual Brewing!

We were greeted at Candle With A Cause by Mitch, Carlos and the boss, Rex the Basset Hound. Mitch and Rex gave us the tour, explaining step-by-step how used bottles are picked up, cleaned, smoothed and filled with cosmetic grade soy wax. It took over two years to perfect their premium candles! This product is an act of love from start to finish. First, bottles are picked up from a variety of businesses which keeps their costs down (do you know how much it costs a small business to recycle used glass bottles?) and keeps the bottles out of landfills. Then, once the consumer purchases the candle, 25% of the net proceeds are donated to a nonprofit. These candles are thoughtful, beautiful and smell so fresh and natural! Mitch and Rex were able to talk with us and you are able to learn more about Candle With A Cause on this podcast episode.

Next, we headed next door to Actual Brewing. Chris showed us through the brewing process from start to finish. Actual Brewing's motto is Brewed With Tender Loving Science in Columbus, Ohio, and I can tell you we were not very far into the tour for Chris (who is a scientist) to surpass my level of scientific knowledge. And that is a good thing: the two styles of beer Burke and I had that evening were delicious, so science and beer are a good pair! Chris, along with Jonathan, spoke with us and and that conversation is also on this podcast episode. We were invited to stay for comedy night, but as you know, we have Nigel the dog at home, and we needed to return to him (and I have to get up extra early for work!)

So, look for Candle With A Cause while you are out and about shopping local in Columbus, and stop by Actual Brewing during their Taproom Hours, in addition to picking up a bottle, or two, at local retailers (or on tap!).
